Sportsman’s Ice Fishing Update – 2/29/20

by

Sportsman’s Lodge Rainy River

A little Over A Month Left Of Ice Fishing Season

The best bite this week continues to be 29’-34’. A notable more aggressive noon – 2 pm bite has been going on the last few days. A mix of 3/4 sauger, 1/4 walleye, and a few tullibee.
Stop sign lures or jigs with glitter, pink/gold or chartreuse/white tipped a minnow has been working. For the best catch rate, a little work can go a long way. It doesn’t hurt to switch up tackle, try one-rod dead sticking and jigging the other, use electronics and test right on bottom vs a few inches off the bottom to grab the attention of the fish as they are swimming by.Ice Conditions and Rally Weekend
We have over 3’ of ice and the snowmobile trails are in good shape. Trails are freshly groomed. The Annual Northwest Angle Edge Riders snowmobile rally is planned for this weekend hosted at our sister resort, Sportsman’s Oak Island Lodge on Oak Island at the Northwest Angle 40 miles north of Baudette. The Bite
20’-27’ on reefs and edges of reefs using pink, gold, red and white jigs tipped with a minnow has been working well. Anglers have been reeling in a nice bag of walleyes and saugers for supper along with an occasional trophy. We have 30 – 32 inches of ice where we fish and travel. Last chance openings available March 1-4, 15-22 and one 3 bedroom cabin 8-22.

Sportsman’s Ice Fishing Update – 2/21/20

Days are getting longer! Ice fish with us through March.
It is a beautiful sunny day today, a nice time to be out on the lake. Unlike many lakes in Minnesota, Lake of the Woods is considered a US/Canada border water lake so our walleye season extends through April 14 and our houses can be out longer. We ice fish through March 31.

This week we have found the best fishing to be in 29’-34’ of water. Anglers have been catching a mix of walleyes and saugers along with a few jumbo perch. We have over 3’ of ice right now where we fish and travel. White, pink and gold jigs have been hot tipped with a minnow using the deadsticking and jigging techniques. Electronics help too!

A what? A muskie!
You just never know what might nibble at your line. One of our guests was fishing for walleye when a 53” muskie took a chomp on his bait! What a surprise that was! In the winter, muskie season is closed and we do not target them but sometimes the fish don’t realize that. This guy got hungry. This huge fish was released and another great fishing story was made.

The best walleye/sauger bite has been in 20’-25’ right now in the current using Buckshots, Glo Shot spoons, purple,  gold and pink jigs tipped with a minnow. A mix of vertical jigging and dead sticking has been the best approach. We have 30”-32” of ice now in the areas we fish and travel. We should be good to go through March 22 here in the islands for some goooood ice fishing.

Sportsman’s Ice Fishing Update – 2/11/20

by

Sportsman’s Lodge Rainy River

 2/11/2020

The latest on the Bite
It has been a sporadic bite this week. Runs here and there and some days better than others. Check out our pictures of the week!

We have had the best luck in 27’-32 in various areas anywhere from a 35-55 minute cruise across the pond in one of our giant snowmobiles past Pine Island. Anglers have been reeling in a mix of walleyes and saugers, the saugers more so, which is typical for this time of year. On cloudy days, glo pink, green and chartreuse jigs, and small lures have been popular. On sunny days, gold has been best all tipped with a minnow or minnow head. Some of the lunker walleyes this week have been caught on a plain hook, Royal Gold Digger lure (2 – 27” by the same guy!) and Oklahoma Dill Pickle lure, pink eye glow and minnow.

A mix of dead sticking and jigging have been the best approach.  Electronics help catch rates and zeroing in on the suspended fish. We see suspended fish on a regular basis. We have 30-32 inches of ice in the areas we fish and travel right now. The temp has fallen this week. We won’t complain about that. Cold temps are making ice for March!

Unlike many lakes in the state, we are a border lake so we can have fish houses out through March 31 Mother Nature willing and in most years, she allows. So if you haven’t had a chance to get out this year or want to get out a few more times, you still have time! Give us a jingle and let’s go fishing!

Fishing will keep the Doctor Away
At least we think so! 🙂 There is something about getting out, enjoying the awesome scenery, fresh cool air and good conversation with friends in the fish house that always seems to help the body. Pure and simple relaxation, good for the soul.

The best bite for a mix of walleyes and saugers this week has been in 24’-30’ feet on the edge of reefs and on top of the sand.  Jigging a Buckshot lure, gold or pink jig or one of those “noisy” lures have been bringing in some nice fish. Vexilars help too! Deadstick with one rod and jig with another. Be sure that the rod you dead stick with you leave it alone and watch the bobber for the best success.

Ice Conditions
The average depth is 28-32 inches in the areas we fish and travel.

The latest bite
Fishing has picked up! 1/4 oz green and orange jigs and spoons have been hot in 26’-32’ of water. As well as glow in the dark and good old gold. A mix of walleye and sauger have been the average catch. Plenty of good eaters, throwbacks and a few lunkers, 20”-30” mixed in. We have 2-3 feet of ice and 6-15 inches of snow in the areas we fish and travel right now.

Our houses are scattered anywhere from a 15-45 minute bombardier ride out. The guides are working hard to get you on the best bite.

Island Time
Island life is good! We are loving the longer days.  A mix of walleye, saugers, and some jumbo perch are being reeled in. Red, pink, glow and gold jigs or spoons have been working tipped with a minnow head or full minnow in 26’-30’off the edges of the reefs. The best technique can vary day by day so try some light vertical jigging, hard jigging, and dead sticking and make sure your hooks are sharp.

Ice Conditions
We have over 2’ of ice in the areas we fish and travel.

Sportsman’s Lodge

Another week of stable temps

We have had another week of stable temps this week.

For the most part, it has been highs in the twenties and teens at night, with little or minimal precipitation. Sounds like this same weather will continue for the week ahead. Great time to be out fishing!

The best bite lately has been found in 24-32 feet of water. Glo white has been the color of the week along with a close second, the good old Lake of the Woods gold or even a plain hook. A mix of dead sticking or jigging with a minnow has been the way to go. Anglers have been reeling in a walleye/sauger mix with occasional eelpout. Average walleye size has been 13”-15” with an occasional lunker. Two walleyes over 30” were caught this week! Check out the pics. A few pike have been caught too, one was 35”. Electronic fish finders are recommended such as Marcums or Vexilars. Anglers who use them can’t say enough about how they really help increase their catch rate. We have 2-3 feet of ice in the areas we fish and travel right now and houses spread out past Pine Island anywhere from a 15-minute bombardier ride to an hour. We are covering a lot of areas to stay on the best bite. We continue to have below-average winter snowfall compared to many parts of Minnesota, 6-15 inches of snow on average overall is on the ice.

Good Fishing
Guests have been having good luck this week. Walleye, sauger, jumbo perch and a few nice 40”+ pike having been caught. We have had stable weather this week and more to come the week ahead the forecast says. We like that! The best walleye/sauger bite has been in 24’-28’ on firm bottom off the edges of reefs using gold, pink, white and glow jigs. Rippin raps also popular as well as a plain hook with a little weight and a minnow head. Perch have been found a little deeper 28-30 again on hard bottom. Electronics help! We have a few to rent if you want to give one a try.

Ice Road
The ice road is open to vehicles from Young’s Bay to Oak Island. Conditions are great!

Ice Conditions
We have over 2’ of ice in the areas we fish and travel right now. Due to the rainy fall we had, the current is more aggressive than a normal year so if you venture off the beaten path be sure you know where you are going. Ice conditions vary. Always good to take a guide and check ice often.

Fishing Report

We have been enjoying the mild temps the past few days and it sounds like we are going to get more. It is a great time to get out and do some fishing!

The best presentation has been glow green, pink and gold 1/8-1/4 oz. jigs tipped with a minnow or minnow head in 24’-32’ of water. Anglers have been reeling in a mix of eater size and throwback size walleyes, saugers, and occasional eelpout, white fish and a trophy walleye. On average, a few days of fishing is getting anglers a nice limit. We have over 2’ of ice in the areas we fish and travel right now and we received a fresh blanket of snow last weekend. Conditions are good.

Plain hooks, buck shots, chubby darters as well as 1/8-1/4 oz jigs tipped with either a full or minnow head in 23–30’ of water has been working just few inches off bottom. Gold and pink have been popular colors. Electronic users can’t say enough about how helpful they are in increasing their catch rate.

Sportsman’s Lodge Rainy River Fishing Report
1/15/2020

Fishing Deeper
It has been a sporadic bite this week. The temperature has been fluctuating quite a bit which usually has a hand in it. Anglers have been having the best luck deadsticking using electronics with a buck-shot rattle spoon and rattle stop signs. A little noise and flashy color seem to help. Glo pink and gold jigs or lures are working well tipped with a full or half minnow. Electronics are picking up quite a few fish hugging bottom right now. It never hurts to try some deadsticking, jigging, even a little aggressive jigging to come up with the combination that works for you. We are fishing 25-32 feet of water right now about a 20-30 minute ride out from the lodge. We have 2 feet of ice and about 10 inches of snow. Not a whole lot of snow for this time of year.

Anglers have been reeling in a mix of walleyes, saugers, more saugers than walleye this week, a few eelpouts and a few northern pike. Come wet a line.

Trails
Black stakes mark the trails from the south shore of the lake to Oak Island and NW Angle and south shore to Warroad as well as Wheeler’s Point to Baudette. Sportsman’s Oak Island Lodge Fishing Report

Afternoons & Gold or Glo
The afternoon bite has been favoring the morning bite this week. Gold, glo, white jigs or buck-shots have been working best. Some nice jumbo perch have been coming up the holes along with the walleye/sauger mix. Most of the perch are being found on the hard bottom. It has been a light bite. Electronics are definitely helping success rates as well as trying some different techniques, deadsticking and jigging. A little flash on your lure or rattle isn’t a bad idea either to get some attention to your lure. The best depth has been 23’-30’ We have 2 feet of ice and 4-10 inches of snow.

Sportsman’s Ice Fishing Update – 1/8/20

by

Moving on into January
And just like that, we are in the second month of our ice fishing season.

We currently have 21-23 inches of ice in the areas we fish and travel and making more by the minute especially this week. A cold snap has knocked at our door.

Anglers have been finding the best bite in 26-31 feet of water. The past week we have seen more walleyes than saugers and quite a few nice walleye in the slot (19.5”-28” must be released) as well as quite a few eelpouts. Electronics have definitely helped many anglers increase their catch rate. Dead sticking with a #2 single plain hook tipped with a minnow about 6 inches off the bottom or jigging with a buckshot or spoon a few more inches up has worked well. Or start a few inches off the bottom and watch electronics, work your way up.

Trail Conditions
Black stakes mark the trails from the south shore to Oak Island and NW Angle and south shore to Warroad as well as Wheeler’s Point to Baudette. Grooming is in progress. Snowmobile traffic only allowed on the Rainy River right now. We need 4-5 more days of single digits and below to build up that river ice before it is safe. For more information about the trails and latest on the land trails, check out Lake of the Wood’s Drifters and the Northwest Angle Edge Riders Facebook pages.

Plowed Roads
We do not maintain a plowed road ourselves as we supply the transportation for all of our trips to our houses via a groomed trail, but if you are interested in venturing out on your own, there are several roads in the area. Be sure to always check with the outfitter for current conditions before heading out as conditions can change and always be sure to stay on marked trails. The entire lake never freezes equally.

The Bite
The bite has been up and down the past few days, some houses doing better than others depending on the time, day and approach. The best bite has been in 22’-26’. More walleyes are being found on the rocks and more saugers with a few perch in the sand and mud. Pink jigs have been hot as well as gold and glo. Guide Tip ~ Try deadsticking with one pole and jigging the other, it doesn’t hurt to turn on the electronics too if you aren’t getting them to hit. Don’t have a fish finder? We have a few to rent, give us a call to reserve.

Ice Conditions
We currently have 18”-20” of ice in the areas we fish and travel. If you are headed off the trails on your own, be sure to check with a local guide for current ice conditions.

Trail Conditions
The trails from the south shore to Oak Island and NW Angle, south shore to Warroad and Warroad to Oak Island/NW Angle are all marked with black stakes. Grooming is in progress. Sportsman’s Ice Fishing Update – 1/2/20

by

Happy New Year from the Sportsman’s Lodge Family

We have been having fun over the holidays!

Nice eating size walleyes have been coming through the ice as well as several throwback size saugers, few nice size tullibee, sturgeon and pike this week. Guests have been having the best luck in 18’-28’ using pink, gold, green glo jigs, and lures tipped with a minnow or shiner. Some guests have had luck the best luck using a full minnow and others just a minnow head. Dead sticking one pole and jigging the other is working well. Electronics such as Vexilars help too. We have a few to rent at the lodge if you want to try one out. Be sure to call ahead to reserve, they go fast.

Ice & Snow
We have 18-20 inches of ice in the areas we fish and travel right now. The forecast is calling for single digits and below zero temps next week. We received some snow last week but still just have 0-10 inches on the ice. Not nearly as much as the rest of the state. With cooler temps in the forecast, we should have 2 feet of ice in no time.

Snowmobile Trails
Snowmobile trails are being groomed. The lake trails from Four Mile Bay on the south side of the lake to Oak Island and Graceton Beach (south side of the lake) to Warroad are groomed. Conditions are improving after the recent snowfall but important not to veer off the trail as the ice is quite rough and ice chunks are sticking up off the trail. No travel is advised on the Rainy River yet until conditions in the current areas improve.Check out the Lake of the Woods Drifters and Northwest Angle Edge Riders for more trail reports.

Sportsman’s Oak Island Lodge

Guide Wack says the action has been good in the islands. A mix of saugers, walleyes and a few pike, perch and muskies have been caught this week. Yes! Muskie! In the islands, we have fantastic muskie fishing in the summer but we usually don’t see too many caught in the winter. A big surprise to a few anglers this week. The best fishing has been in 23’-24’ on the rocks for walleyes and off the rocks for other species. Watermelon color, gold, and glo jigs especially those with some rattle and noise to them have been working the best this week. Some anglers are swearing by just the minnow head instead of the full minnow especially on lures with a treble hook.

Ice & Snow
We have 16-18 inches of ice in the areas we fish and travel. 3-10 inches of snow.

Snowmobile Trails
The trail from Four Mile Bay to Oak Island is in decent shape, getting better but it is important to stay on the trail. With not too much snow base yet, there are ice chunks off the trail.Check out the Lake of the Woods Drifters and Northwest Angle Edge Riders for more trail reports.

Ice Road from Young’s Bay to the Lodge
Plowing and maintenance are in progress. It should be ready to go next week. Our signs will be up as soon as it is. For now, please give us a call and we will lead you out.

Sportsman’s Ice Fishing Update – 12/26/19

by

Catching Fish
Mix of walleye and sauger, mostly sauger this week.  A few guests reeled in some real nice sturgeon up through the holes, 49″, 52” and 55″ and a few eelpout too. Glo green and red buckshots tipped with minnows are hot right now in 18′ – 26′ in the mud. Limits are being caught within 1-2 days of fishing.

Ice Conditions
We currently have 17”-20” of ice in the areas we fish and travel and little snow cover.

If you are headed out on your own.
Area roads are open. Here is a recent report from a few open roads near the lodge. Adrian’s out of Four Mile Bay is currently allowing 1/2 tons pulling up to 24′ houses and bigger pickups pulling up to 21′ houses. The road goes out about 3 1/2 miles past Pine Island. Morris Point is allowing up to 1/2 tons with no wheel houses yet but possibly very soon. Please remember to stay on the marked roads and trails, ice conditions vary on the lake.

Snowmobile Trails
Not much change in the trail conditions this week.  We have 0-4” of snow on the trails.  The lake trails are marked between Four Mile Bay to Oak Island and Graceton Beach to Warroad with black stakes.  Sounds like we have a chance for a few more inches of snow coming in on Thursday.  When you head out, watch for several bare ice spots as well as chunk ice sticking up. Grooming will begin as soon as we get more snow. No travel is advised on the Rainy River. Ice is inconsistent and not safe yet due to the current. For more information about the trails check out the Lake of the Woods Drifters and Northwest Angle Edge Riders updates.

Sportsman’s Oak Island Lodge

We open up Thursday, December 26!
The fish houses are ready!  The fish are biting!  Gold, red and orange are hot colored jigs right now.  Right now we have 10-16 inches of ice in the areas we travel.  Apps, pizzas, and cocktails will be available starting at 11 am today and the full dinner menu starting at 5 pm. We will start serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily starting Friday.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

Road from Young’s Bay to the Resort
The main ice road from Young’s Bay to the island is not quite ready yet so we will be using an alternative route for now. Guests, please give us a call ahead of time to be led out.

Trail from Four Mile Bay/Sportsman’s Lodge
The lake trails are marked with black stakes from Four Mile Bay near Sportsman’s Baudette location to Oak Island and Young’s Bay at the angle to the lodge.  We don’t have much snow, 0”-6” right now, so if you head out, be sure to watch for bare spots and ice chunks. The Lake of the Woods passengers Service will be running from Sportsman’s Lodge to Oak Island starting December 26.

Happy Holidays from the Sportsman’s Family to yours!
