Walleye Facts

Walleye is the largest member of the perch family and has been known to reach 25 pounds.  North of the border, the walleye is more commonly known as pickerel. Its name comes from the fact that the fish’s eyes point outward, as if looking at the walls.  They also have huge marble-like eyes, which feature a layer of reflective pigment, which means that the walleye can see quite well in dim light.  The most common prey is the yellow perch which lacks this ability to see well in low light.  This trait alone has made the walleye a successful predator.

Walleye are among the most popular of all game fish. Each year, Minnesota anglers keep roughly 3.5 million walleyes totaling 4 million pounds.

The walleye is the state fish of Minnesota and South Dakota and the official fish of Saskatchewan. More walleye is eaten in Minnesota than in any other state of the United States. Locally, Baudette is known as the “Walleye Capital” of the World”. You can see the 40 foot statue of Willie Walleye at the corner of Highway 11 and International Drive in Baudette. Between the Lake and the River…

…walleyes are being found.  Limits of walleye and saugers have been caught in the areas by Garden Island and Little Oak. Hammered gold spinners tipped with a leech or a crawler have been effective in 14’-24’ water. The areas outside of Pine Island or Zippel Bay have been producing the walleye bite as well.  The depths between 24’ and 30’ seem to give you the best chances of the bite.  Jigs with frozen shiners have been producing the best action.  On the River, get to the 14’-20’ areas and walleyes can be found.  Jigs with shiners have been the most effective here as well.

Fall is in the air. The current water temperature is 59.7 degrees. We have started to see the walleyes move in shallower and up river. The stage is getting set for the annual emerald shiner run. Where shiners run, walleyes are sure to follow. Fall fishing is a great time!  Fall is also a great time to experience the changing of the seasons and the changing of the colors.  Nature’s palette can provide an excellent backdrop to all of your fishing pictures. The Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources Fall Color Finder is a great resource to find where the colors are at.
Mother Nature likes to toy with us in the Fall.  One needs to be prepared for any type of weather during this time.  The weather forecast looks to bring us temperatures in the high 60’s to the high 70’s and SUN.  There are a few days with rain forecasted and winds look to remain steady between 8 and 11mph.  The best advice is to dress in layers and be prepared for anything!!
Because we are still in the midst of repairing our docks from this summer’s high water, only some of the boat slips are rentable.  They are on a reserved-basis only so please call the front desk at 1-800-862-8602 to find out if there is one available.  However at this time, there is no electricity at the docks so please keep that in mind when wanting to reserve a slip.

Seventy Miles Long and Wide…

Did you know that Lake of the Woods is over seventy miles long and wide, and contains more than 14, 552 islands and 65,000 (105,000 km) of shoreline?  So with all that water to choose from, where do we fish?  This week, walleye are being found in a variety of areas.  Sand, rocks, reefs and mud just to name a few.  Shad Raps and Wally Divers are producing walleye using controlled depth fishing in among 30’-35’ water in the muddy areas.  Up around GardenIsland has been extremely productive again this week.  Hammered gold spinners tipped with a leech or a crawler have also been effective in 15’-25’ water in among the rocks and the shallow corners of reefs.  Head outside of the Gap or near Pine Island to get those walleyes!

Fall is in the air. It won’t be long and we will start seeing the walleyes start moving in shallower and up river. The stage is getting set for the annual emerald shiner run. Where shiners run, walleyes are sure to follow. Fall fishing is a great time!

We did not get the snow that hit Calgary, Alberta but the temperatures did dip a bit.  It looks as if though we are on a slight rebound as the weather forecast for the week includes partly sunny skies, highs getting to the high 60’s with just a slight chance of rain and some wind throughout the week.

Around the lake we go…

Get your boat, get your gear and get your buddies and get going north.  Limits of walleyes are being caught in and around GardenIsland.  We’ve been finding that the muddy areas in 30’-35’ water have been producing with our controlled depth fishing using a variety of Shad Raps and Wally Divers.  Hammered gold spinners tipped with a leech or a crawler have also been effective in 15’-20’ water in among the rocks and the shallow corners of reefs.

The weather forecast for the week includes partly sunny to partly cloudy skies, highs in the high-60’s to low to mid 70’s with a chance of rain and some wind throughout the week.

The water has been receding in front of the lodge to where we are able to load and unload guests from the charter boats without having to use the centralized docking system.  But as always, things can change so if the weather changes, we will too.  Boat slips, however, are still unavailable at this time.  Please give the front desk a call at 1-800-862-8602 if you have any questions.

What kind of fish can we find this week?

Choosy walleye is what we’ve been finding.  Slow and steady seems to be winning out when fishing for walleye. Hammered gold jigs with minnows or crawler harnesses with leeches in 25’-30’ water around GardenIsland or Little Oak seem to be producing the bite. Either anchoring or drifting have been producing results too.  The muskie bite is still somewhat finicky but doing better in the late evenings around the shore lines or in the weed beds especially when the moon is bright.  Smaller lures with a slower presentation seem to be having the best luck but if you like a faster option, the cowgirls seem to be the lure of choice.  There’s also been reports of the start of some crappie action and also the northerns and perch have been around as well.

The weather looks to be about the same as the south end with partly sunny to partly cloudy skies, highs in the high-60’s to low 70’s with just a slight chance of rain throughout the week.

Fall rates start Sept 15!

Off the hook…

This week of controlled depth fishing, anglers have found most of their walleyes in the trophy and slot walleyes. So pump up your arms, and get ready for the fight!  Head up by Garden Island, get into 30’-32’ depth and get those Wally Divers, Shad Raps and Clown Lures moving and the walleye will keep coming.  Bait fishing is still doing well too.  Head up by Little Oak to the 19’-24’ range to find the walleye.  Hammered gold spinners tipped with leeches or crawlers are still the lure of choice.  The weather looks like a mixed bag coming up this next week with days of partly to mostly sunny skies, some rain and some wind, with temps in the mid-70’s.

The water is going down but because it is still higher than normal we continue to use our centralized loading/unloading system for our charter boats.  Some of our boat slips are available for use at this time.  Call our front desk at 1-800-862-8602 to find out what’s available as they are on a reserved-basis only.  However, because of the fluctuating water, electricity is not available at this time.

Fishing Report from Sportsman’s Lodge Lake of the Woods 12-26-2011

Happy Holidays Everyone! We hope everyone had a nice Christmas! Fishing has been great!
We had another great week of fishing last week here on Lake of the Woods. Many excellent and over the top action days! 50-100+ fish per days, not bad, not bad at all!  Some of the best fishing we have seen in years!  The past few days we have seen the bite slow a bit but still very good! A nice pail of walleyes by the end of the day is still a great day!  We are seeing about a 60% sauger and 40% walleye ratio right now.  The best depth has been in 22’-27’ of water just outside of Pine Island.  Stop signs, Buckshots and the glass pink and orange jigs have been hot this week. A little shine to your tackle in our waters tend to really do well.  Anglers using Vexilars/Fish Finders have had even better luck.  Vertical jigging with a minnow has been the best technique at this time.

Ice Conditions
We currently have 14-16 inches of ice in the areas we travel and fish just outside of Pine Island at this time.  If you plan to venture out on your own please remember, ATV’s and light vehicles only are advised at this time and allowed out on the trails and roads. Please check with local resorts before going out as the entire 950,000+ acre lake does not freeze equally or at the same time.

Trail Report
As of today we only still have just a dusting of snow and not a whole lot in our forecast at this point maybe a little shot on Wednesday.  It is a strange start to your season here in the northland.  The land trails are closed and only the trails to fish houses are marked at this time.
