Oak Island Lake of the Woods Fishing Report

by

Where, oh where do we go?

Find your way to the walleyes by heading into the 15’-35’ depths by Little Oak or Falcon Islands. Reports of pulling spinners along the shore line seem to be the trick to finding them too. The muskie bite has been finicky but overall doing well over the sand bays.

The boat launch at Young’s Bay is open. The water is high at the lodge but boat docking is available and we continue to make changes to keep the service available and safe.

So many fish…so little time…

There’s good fishing to be had.  Find your way around Pine Island, drift with hammered gold spinners with leeches, crawlers or minnows in 8’-16’ water and the walleyes will be there.  There’s also good jig fishing in 10’-14’ water so don’t forget to set your course for that as well.  Sunny skies and temps in the mid-70’s are in the forecast as well so that always makes fishing brighter.  Due to the high water, we are still using our centralized loading/unloading system so that our guests remain safe and their feet remain dry.  Call our front desk at 1-800-862-8602 to find out what’s available for our boat slips as they are on a reserved-basis only.  However, because of the high water, electricity is not available at this time.

Find the Islands, Find the Fish…

Jig fishing and spinners is the way to find the fish in depths of 20’-30’ by Little Oak, FlagIsland or BrushIsland.  If you’re on the Canadian side of the water, try FalconIsland in 23’-26’ too.  It seems as if the best bite has been near the reefs or the island points.  The boat launch at Young’s Bay is open. The water is high at the lodge but boat docking is available and we continue to make changes to keep the service available and safe.

STRONG and STEADY…

Fishing has remained strong and steady despite the water continuing to rise and fall.  Weather looks to be improving as well with forecasts of sunny skies and decreased winds.

Fishing has been good up in the Little Traverse areas, west side of GardenIsland and around PineIsland as well.  Hammered gold spinners are still the tackle of choice tipped with crawlers or leeches.  Fish can still be found in the sand areas around the 12’-18’ depths but don’t forget to navigate towards the shallow rocks as well.

Balsdon, Anderson Group, July 3rd, 2014, guided by Captain Mike

Typically, July and August are the best months of the summer to reel in that trophy walleye.  We do have fishing packages available throughout the months; call our front desk at 800-862-8602 to book your reservation now so that you can land the big one.

Water levels at the lodge continue to remain high.  We have put in a centralized loading/unloading system so that guests can get to the launch boats despite the high water.  We do have some of our boat slips available for rent as well, if you would like to bring your own boat.  They are on a reserved-basis only so give us a call to see what’s available.  However, at this time because of the high water levels, we do not have electricity at the docks.  The No Wake order is still in effect to help protect the river bank and docks so please pay close attention.

Nice, fat fish is what has been the find over the past week.  Make your way along the banks or in among the shorelines up by Little Oak or on either side of Falcon Island and you will be busy reeling them in.  There was also reports of a good Canadian Muskie opener too with fish between 46” and 49” being caught and released.

High Water
The boat launch at Young’s Bay is open. The water is high at the lodge but boat docking is available and we continue to make changes to keep the service available and safe.

Relax in the islands!
Walleyes, Muskies, Pike and Bass a plenty. Incredible scenery, starry nights and relaxation.

Awesome.  Excellent.  Fabulous.  The first three words spoken when asked how the fishing has been this week.  Not too shabby considering the water levels continue to go up and down.  The bite has been good just outside of Pine Island or up north by Garden Island.  Set your line with a hammered gold spinner tipped with either minnows or leeches in 10’to 14’ of water, find some sand and you will be on the fish.  Closer to the Angle, it seems as if the shallow rocks have been holding some walleye as well.

The water levels continue to go up and down again this week.  Our centralized loading/unloading dock system is working well so that guests can safely get in/out of our boats to enjoy their fishing adventures.  Some of our dock slips are available as well; they are on a reserved-basis only and can be reserved by calling the lodge at 800-862-8602.  You can view the water levels as well by viewing our dock cam.

Even with water levels going up and down, the fish have not backed down.  The bite has been extremely good up around Little Traverse by Garden Island and also by Little Oak Island.  Get your line in water anywhere from 12’ – 21’, use hammered gold, pink or orange spinners topped off with minnows, leeches or crawlers and you should have your limit in no time.   Also, our Take A Kid Fishing fisher people reported that the walleyes were biting over by Morris Point or Zippel Bay or up by Long Point too.  Make your reservation today  so that you can try one of our charter trips with an experienced guide, boat with onboard restroom, use of poles, bait, tackle, assortment of pop and water and fish cleaning provided. No hassles, no experience or equipment required.  www.sportsmanslodges.com 800-862-8602

Little Oak Island is the place to be on the U.S. side of the water and on the Canadian side, head West to Falcon Island in Ontario.  You won’t be disappointed if you do.  Orange jigs with either chubs or frozen shiners seem to working well in 20-30 feet can get you the results you are looking for.

The walleyes are biting!
It has been a rainy past few weeks but it sounds like we are going to start drying out now and get back to sun and fun!  Despite the rains, the fishing has been good. Drifting with gold or bright orange jigs tipped with a frozen shiner or live chub has been doing best.

Areas with a good bite have been Little Oak Island and Tug Channel in 20-30 feet of water.

Sweet Summertime!
The sounds of the water, the beautiful scenery and the incredible walleye, pike, bass and muskie fishing awaits you. Book your summer trip today www.oakislandlodge.com 800-772-8411

Summer is here! Get out on the water and catch yourself some Walleye!
Fishing continues to do well despite the wet weather that continues to hang on.  Anywhere North is the place to be especially around the sandbars.  Crawlers, leeches or minnows on hammered gold spinners seem to be what’s catching their attention.  If you’re still wanting to jig fish, there’s still a decent bite happening with jigs, particularly pink or chartreuse, with frozen shiners in depths of 25’-30’ just outside Pine Island and Morris Point Gap.  Try one of our charter trips, experienced guide, boat with onboard restroom, use of poles, bait, tackle, assortment of pop and water and fish cleaning provided. No hassles, no experience or equipment required. Sit back, take in the views and reel in the fish.  After a day of fishing enjoy your fish fried up for a tasty appetizer in the Sandbar.
