Island fishing just keeps rolling on as good as ever

by

Fish are being found in variety of places and are being caught a variety of ways.  Jigging rock structures and shorelines has been putting fish in the coolers.  Chartreuse and pink jigs tipped with a minnow.  Spinners are producing as well! You can’t go wrong with hammered gold.  There are fish on the shorelines and points as well as the humps and reefs.

As well as walleyes fishing, muskie fishing is getting very good.  When targeting these toothy giants, look for the classic spots.  Rocky points and weedy bays while burning buck tails will move the most fish!  Good luck and we will see you out there!

Heating Up!

by

Rolling into mid-July with water temps still hanging around that 70 degree mark, the walleyes are still hanging shallow.  With the unseasonably cool June that we experienced, walleyes still haven’t pushed way out and are holding on structures. This means that drifting spinners and jigging are great way to target these walleyes!  The spinner bite is rolling on and actually seeming to get better as we move through July.  Hammered gold and white spinners tipped with a crawler seem to be producing the best.  Concentrate on areas of 9’-17’, and make sure that you keep moving.  .8 to 1 mph is a great speed to catch the attention of a hungry walleye.

Jigging is still catching fish as well.  Gold and pink jigs tipped with either a leech or a minnow.  These walleyes are slowing making their way deeper so if you are headed out jigging get out into that 30’-32’ range.

As summer gets hotter so will that classic trolling bite.  28’-32’ trolling cranks will continue to get better.  Cover ground at about 2.5mph you will find the fish or give us a call, we have guides available! No equipment necessary and groups of 1+ welcome!

The July bite is heating up!

by

Walleyes
Waters are beginning to clear up in the islands and fishing is improving as well. With the mayfly hatch, the windblown shorelines will be holding fish as well as the mud adjacent to rock reefs and structures. Jigging around these structures is still producing good fish. Pink, gold and chartreuse have all produced. Drifting spinners has been very good. Hammered gold and orange have been the go to colors. There has been no front runner in bait choice; crawlers and leeches both will produce.

Muskies
The muskie bite is heating up! A fast moving bucktail at shallow weed beds and rock points and structures is working well.  Cover water and contact as many fish as possible! Check out this whopper!

Jigs, Spinners, Crankbaits….lots of options

by

The weather has begun to become normal again after the last few weeks and the fish are getting hungry again! The may fly hatch is in full swing but it hasn’t seemed to slow the walleyes down. A good jig bite has continued into July. 31’ seems to be the magic number out in the mud. Pink has been by far the best color. Tipping your jig with a shiner will produce but try tipping with a leech if the bite slows.

The spinner bite continues to produce great numbers of walleyes. 7’-14’ has been the best depths. A hammered gold spinner with a crawler has far outdone any other color or bait as of late!

A great trolling bite is beginning to show itself as well. In the mornings and evenings up shallows has good numbers of active walleyes. 6’-12’ with crankbaits, trolling anywhere from 2.2 mph to 3.5 mph. During the day, 30’-32’ is holding great numbers of walleyes. Cover water and you should run into some good fish!

Windblown shorelines have been holding great numbers of walleyes.  Drifting spinners has been the best way tactic.   Hammered gold has far out fished the competition.  Leeches seem to be the bait of choice but it doesn’t hurt to bring some crawlers along as well.  Flag island flats are holding fishing in the cleaner water.  It is a large area so be mobile and find the fish!

As summer rolls on, so does the great fishing.  Excellent numbers of walleyes are being caught all over the lake.  Drifting or trolling spinners has been producing the best numbers of walleyes.  Hammered gold and orange spinners in the 8’-20’ have been the ticket in the last few days.  Crawlers and leeches are both catching fish at equal rates.  Speed has been the key, slow and steady!  Just enough to keep those spinners moving has been good as the water has been dirtier than usual.  With the water clearing up the walleyes should get back to being aggressive.

Reeling in some nice fish this summer!

A good jig bite still is going on.  30’-32’ out in the mud still is kicking out good schools of walleyes.  The rocks reefs have been starting hold fish all up and down Long Point as well!  22’-26’ on these rocks is your best depth to start.  Pink jigs tipped with a frozen shiner or a leech about a foot off the bottom is the best way to go.

Crankbaits are starting to heat up along Pine Island.  6’-12’ in the morning and evenings has been very good.  Trolling 2-3 mph all along Pine Island and in front of the gap.  If you are bored one evening, get out and do some trolling! We will see you out there! Good Luck!

High winds have dirtied the water a bit but the walleyes are still going strong.  It’s that time of year where Flag Island Flats begins to turn on.  Drift hammered gold spinners in the cleanest water on these flats! The jig bite is still going strong on the rocks as well.  Muskie season opened last weekend so if you are making the trek north make sure to pack that heavy gear!

Reeling in walleyes

by

Storms and wind have plagued Lake of the Woods this week.  Fishing has slowed but in no way does that mean the walleyes aren’t biting.  One major key is FIND CLEAN WATER!  Fishing in mud stained water is always going to be tough.  When these storms and wind roll through it is important to slow down!  Jig and a frozen shiner still catching fish out in 28’-30’.  Pink, gold, and yellow are all good colors.

The fish are biting!

6-21-collage

Spinner fishing has been very good and still is.  Gold spinners drifting in 8’-18’ has been producing some nice walleyes.  Varying day to day but tipping these spinners with leeches and crawlers continue to out do minnows.  Slow down your presentation and try and find the cleanest water!  Good Luck!

Jig & a Minnow

by

Island times are rolling on as good as ever!  Jig and a minnow are still proving to be the best tactic to target walleyes.  Gold has proven to be the best color week in and week out but pink and chartreuse have been working as well!   Windblown shorelines are holding great numbers of walleyes, as well as perch and pike!
Summer is here and the fish are biting!
