Oak Island Fishing Report

The bite is picking up!
Some nice 14”-16” walleyes are being found points in 20’-24’ of water but, they are on the move! Anglers are starting to see some large schools move to the edges of the reefs. Jigging with gold or orange jigs tipped with a minnow or gold or orange crawler harnesses tipped with a crawler has been the most successful. Summer is here! Time to get out fishing!

Decent Pike Fishing this week
Shallow bays have been the best spot to find pike but like the walleyes, they are also on the move deeper. Flashy spoons and shad raps have been the hot ticket. The average size of the pike this week has been between 22”-28”.

The best fishing
Areas around Lighthouse Gap and outside of Pine Island in 17’-24’ has been the best spots to get into some good walleye fishing. The river has been hit or miss. Few feet shallower is best in the mornings and evenings.  Water temperature is currently hovering around 51-53 degrees. Hammered gold spinners with 1-2 oz. jigs and 3/8 oz. gold or bright orange jigs tipped with a minnow are working best.

Reeling in the walleyes
Nice 14-15 inch walleyes and a few larger have been caught this week. Pulling hammered gold spinners and a 1-2 ounce sinker tipped with a minnow in 14’-16’ has been working well or a 3/8 ounce jig of any color tipped with a minnow.  Rocky lake bottom have been best, but don’t count out the mud for the weekend.

50 inch muskie!
Some recent guests sure got a surprise this week. They were jigging for walleyes in 15 feet of water when they got a tug and then another real big tug. After a fight, a 50 inch muskie came to the surface! What a thrill!

Spring Bass & Pike bite
The spring bass and pike bite has been real good. Casting shad raps in shallow weed beds is the best approach. Several 20”-22” pike have been found this week.

Sturgeon & Pike are biting now! Walleye Opener is this Saturday!
The sturgeon bite has been good in the Rainy River. Areas right in front of the lodge, Wheeler’s Point, Four Mile Bay as well as up river by Baudette and Clementson have been hot. Anchor up in a deep trough of the river bed with a 4/0 or 5/0 circle hook, 2-3 ounces of weight and a gob of night crawlers on the end. It might take a few minutes, it might take an hour but once one of these prehistoric monsters hit, be ready! They will take you for all your worth!  The past week we saw several in the 50”-60” range and under 40”. Keep one season (within size limits) runs through May 7. Make sure you pick up a sturgeon tag at any licensed agent before going out if you plan to keep one.  Catch and release season runs May 8-15.  The season closes a short time May 16-June 30 and then starts again July 1.  Sturgeon bite all year but spring in the river is definitely one of the best times to find them. Check out some of the recent catches!

Pike season is heating up. Weed beds in Zippel Bay, Four Mile Bay and most any creek flowing into the Rainy River you will find this feisty fish right now.  Throw a few casts with a flashy spoon to get their attention.

Who’s ready for walleye?

Now on to walleyes! The season begins Saturday, May 9!  We expect to see a very active bite. The walleyes are off their spawning beds and looking to eat.  Four Mile Bay, Light House Gap, Morris Point Gap and just outside of Pine Island will be hot spots. Drifting or casting whatever you like to do should work in 6’-12’ of water.  Gold or pink jigs or spinners tipped with a shiner or fathead minnow is all you need. Morning and evening try a slip bobber.  We have hardly any current in the river right now. Water temperature is around 55 degrees. Weather forecast looks nice!

Sturgeon season is in full swing!
Some nice sturgeon continue to be found this week and how about this weather! Excellent days to be out on the water.  4/0 and 5/0 circle hooks, 1-3 ounce no roll sinker and night crawlers work best. Anchor up along the incline of a deep hole in the river bottom and get ready for the action. Areas in front of the lodge, Four Mile Bay, Wheeler’s Point and Clementson have all produced some nice sturgeon.  Keep one season, fish must be 45”-50” inclusive or over 75” last until May 7. Catch and release season runs May 8-15. Guided Trips available.

Pike Season
Pike season never closes on Lake of the Woods and we have a very large population of nice trophy pike right now. Some of the best luck has been found in Zippel Bay, Four Mile Bay and shallow creeks. Casting dare devils or any shiny spoon has been working well.

Sturgeon & Northern Pike are in the spotlight!
With walleye season closed until May 9, sturgeon and pike are taking center stage! The sturgeon bite this week has been consistent. Not as many monsters, but still good action. Lots of 25-40 inchers were caught and released. The best approach has been anchoring up in the Rainy River in deep holes or mid channel. Mornings favored the afternoons this weekend, but that can usually change with the day. Areas 3 miles west of Baudette, in front of the lodge and near Wheeler’s Point have all been good spots. A 2 oz. weight, 4/0 or 5/0 circle hook and gob of night crawlers bring them in. We still have openings this weekend! Book your stay 800-862-8602!

The pike bite has been best in the winter road river area and any creeks along the river that are open. A decent bullhead bite has also been reported when targeting pike. Flashy spoons or dead ciscos floated with a bobber are great approaches. Some have been just using a jig and a minnow too.

Stats
Water temperature currently 51 degrees. Water is churned up from the wind but not too bad. Water level is lower than normal and run off is minimal if any.  Forecast this week is:

Ice Out
Slow but sure, we are making progress.

Lake of the Woods Ice Conditions & Fishing Report

by

3/11/2015

Is spring coming early or are we just being teased?
Like much of the state we have received some warm weather this week too. What does this mean for ice fishing?  Safety first!  At this point we have only lost snow. We still have 33 inches of ice on the river, 38 inches on Four Mile Bay and nearly 4 feet on the lake. The forecast is calling for highs in the forties through the weekend and lows in the upper twenties/lower thirties. Mostly overcast skies (this helps!). Next week’s forecast cools down with highs in the thirties and lows in the lower twenties. We see no problem fishing through this weekend and possibly next week. It all depends on how much sun and warm temperatures we get through this weekend.   We check ice conditions daily and will keep you updated! Daily reports can be found on our Facebook page here.

How’s fishing?
We have a variety of houses in the mud and reefs in 25-32 feet of water. The ride out to the fish houses takes anywhere from 15-45 minutes.  If we had it our way, the shorter the ride the better however, the fish aren’t agreeing this year.  That’s fishing!  Our goal is to give you the best fishing experience possible so we go where the fish are.  A mix of walleyes, saugers, tulibees, a few perch and pike have been reeled in this week. Bright colored jigs orange, pink and gold have been working well tipped with a minnow. Buck shots have also done well. A little jigging and using a vexilar helps your fishing success!

Walleye fishing open until April 14, re-opening May 9. Limit change on the Rainy River and Four Mile Bay March 1-April 14. Pike season never closes and sturgeon fishing is catch and release now through April 23, keep one within size limits April 24-May 7 and catch and release again May 8-15.

Trail Report
Grooming has ended for the year. Trails are being maintained by local resorts with drags. Use caution around the pressure ridges. Pressure ridges pull apart and push together when the temperature warms and cools.

River Fishing
Won’t be long and we will be back in the boats. The river is open 58 miles east of the resort right now. The first landing near us that will open will be at Birchdale, 38 miles away. When? Good question? My guess is 10-14 days at this point. Lots of factors come in to play of course, stay tuned!  Lodging rates as low as $40 per person per night (plus tax based on double occ) April 1-May 20! Get your reservations in now!
