Round about we go…

Little Oak seems to be the hot spot lately for the walleye bite.  Anglers have been anywhere in the 18’-24’ depths using hammered gold jigs tipped with minnows or crawler harnesses with leeches . You may even be able to catch a few perch, crappie and bass as well.  The muskie bite is active around the shore lines or in the weed beds. Next week’s weather looks to have partly sunny skies, temps ranging from the high 50’s to the low 70’s with just a slight chance of rain and wind throughout the week.

Among the Islands…

Head over to Little Oak or Four Blocks with your hammered gold jigs tipped with minnows or crawler harnesses with leeches on your fishing rods and you should find the walleye in the 20’-25’ water mark.  You may even be able to catch a few perch, crappie and bass as well.  The muskie bite is active around the shore lines or in the weed beds. Smaller lures with a slower presentation are still the most effective method being used.  No snow in the forecast as the weather looks to have partly sunny skies, temps getting to the high-60’s with just a slight chance of rain and wind throughout the week.

Around the Island we go…

The muskie bite is producing in the late evenings around the shore lines or in the weed beds. Smaller lures with a slower presentation are the best choice for getting them to bite but if you like a faster option, the cowgirls are the way to go.  The walleyes continue to hit on hammered gold jigs tipped with minnows or crawler harnesses with leeches in 25’-30’ water around GardenIsland or Little Oak.   The weather looks to be about the same as the south end with partly sunny to partly cloudy skies, highs in the high-60’s to low 70’s with just a slight chance of rain and wind throughout the week.

True North, Grid North or Magnetic North?

Set your GPS to the north around Garden Island and you will find walleyes being caught.  Controlled depth fishing has been producing in 30’-35’ water in the muddy areas.  Also effective is in 15’-20’ water in among the rocks and the shallow corners of reefs.  Hammered gold spinners, Shad Raps, Little Joes and Wally Divers are getting the job done.

Jig fishing is producing the walleye bite as well.  Reports have been that the early morning or the late afternoon bite outside the Gap to around 30’ water is when and where those walleyes are biting.

The weather forecast for the week includes partly sunny to partly cloudy skies, highs in the high-60’s to low 70’s with just a slight chance of rain throughout the week.

The water has been receding in front of the lodge to where we are able to load and unload guests from the launch boats without having to use the centralized docking system.  But as always, things can change so if the weather changes, we will too.  Boat slips, however, are still unavailable at this time.  Please give the front desk a call at 1-800-862-8602 if you have any questions.

…to find the fish…

There’s reports of big walleyes abound swimming the lake.  Hammered gold jigs with minnows or crawler harnesses with leeches in 25’-30’ water around Garden Island or Little Oak seem to be where the walleyes are being found.  It seems as if either anchoring or drifting have been producing results too.  The muskie bite is still somewhat finicky but doing better in the late evenings around the shore lines or in the weed beds especially when the moon is bright.  Smaller lures with a slower presentation seem to be having the best luck but if you like a faster option, the cowgirls seem to be the lure of choice.  There’s also been reports of the start of some crappie action and also the northerns and perch have been around as well.  Just like the south end, the weather looks like it will be a mixed bag of partly sunny to partly cloudy skies, chances of rain but with temps ranging from the mid-60’s to the low 70’s.

The Tale of Two Sides…

Just like the South End, there have been big walleye and slot walleye being found in Minnesota waters.  The keepers have been hiding and are harder to lure up for the bite.  Little Oak, Garden Island and Four Blocks have seem to be producing the most walleye so head towards the depths of 19’-24’ and be patient!!

The muskie bite has certainly picked up in the Canadian watersover the last week.  Weed beds and around the shorelines have been producing the best results.  Make sure you are in shallow water of 10’ or below; bucktails have been the lure of choice for this week.  The walleye bite is still holding steady as well.  The algae bloom is in full stride so be prepared to navigate through the green water.  The weather looks similar to the South end with some chance of rain, temps in the mid-70’s and partly to mostly sunny skies.

The water has gone down about 3 inches but it still continues to be high.  The boat launch at Young’s Bay is open. Boat docking is available at the lodge and we continue to make changes to keep the service available and safe.

Find the Islands, Find the Fish…

Jig fishing and spinners is the way to find the fish in depths of 20’-30’ by Little Oak, FlagIsland or BrushIsland.  If you’re on the Canadian side of the water, try FalconIsland in 23’-26’ too.  It seems as if the best bite has been near the reefs or the island points.  The boat launch at Young’s Bay is open. The water is high at the lodge but boat docking is available and we continue to make changes to keep the service available and safe.

Nice, fat fish is what has been the find over the past week.  Make your way along the banks or in among the shorelines up by Little Oak or on either side of Falcon Island and you will be busy reeling them in.  There was also reports of a good Canadian Muskie opener too with fish between 46” and 49” being caught and released.

The walleyes are biting!
It has been a rainy past few weeks but it sounds like we are going to start drying out now and get back to sun and fun!  Despite the rains, the fishing has been good. Drifting with gold or bright orange jigs tipped with a frozen shiner or live chub has been doing best.

Areas with a good bite have been Little Oak Island and Tug Channel in 20-30 feet of water.

Sweet Summertime!
The sounds of the water, the beautiful scenery and the incredible walleye, pike, bass and muskie fishing awaits you. Book your summer trip today www.oakislandlodge.com 800-772-8411

Fishing remains good despite high water.
Sportsman’s Oak Island Lodge has wet docks but we continue to make changes to keep docking safe and available. If you are traveling from the east, there are some road closures near International Falls. Check out 511mn.org for the most up to date information.

Warmer, more spring-like weather has finally rolled in!

Both anglers and snowmobilers have been enjoying the reprieve from sub-zero temperatures and have been taking advantage of the 30 and 40 degree highs. Evening lows have been consistently dipping below freezing, and it looks like that will continue into the next few weeks.

Visit http://goo.gl/7DmOgR  for a full, local weather report.

Despite the weather changes, the fishing remains productive. Sportsman’s Oak Island Lodge guides report “steady action and a lot of fish”. Minnows and fatheads remain the popular bait, while buckshot lures in flashy and bright colors have been the tackle of choice.

Anglers have been consistently reeling in walleyes measuring between 16” and 18”, and have seen their fair share of both slot (19.5”-28”) and trophy sized walleye. A guest reported a 29.5” walleye on Saturday morning.

The best bite has been found in the 22 to 24 foot depth range.

Trail Conditions
Warmer temperatures have brought with them a fair amount of slush on and around trails and ice roads. While plenty of ice remains in these areas, we strongly recommend staying within the groomed and maintained trails and roads.

Public trails continue to be groomed as much as state and local club funding allows. Many resorts help maintain the trails or use their own private trails. Local groomers and riders have reported beautiful riding conditions throughout the area.

Ice Conditions
We currently have between 46 and 48 inches of ice in the areas that we travel and fish.

Ice Road
The ice road from Young’s Bay to Oak Island continues to be maintained. Due to warmer weather conditions, some slush has developed on and around the road, however, there is still a substantial amount of ice along the trail and it is safe for travel.
