Hit or Miss
The fishing has been hit or miss this week. The best tip is if one method doesn’t work try another. We are also getting to the end of the fish fly hatch so that should help the bite as well. The best approach has been using 3/8 oz. gold jigs tipped with a minnow or gold and pink spinners and a few ounce sinker tipped with a night crawler or leech in 20’-30’ of water on the reefs. Anglers are also find a few pulling crankbaits in shallow bays as well. The current water temperature is 68 degrees.

Muskies & Northern Pike
The bite was a little slow last week with the cold snap but the weather the past week has warmed up nicely and the bite has started to pick up. Shallow weedy bays using small baits are working well. Guide tip is to slow down your retrieval. As we move into late July we expect the bite to really get good!

Muskie fishing is heating up and walleyes are on the move

by

Walleyes are on the move this week to the reefs. Anglers have been finding the best schools in 20’-30’ of water on the reefs using a 3/8 ounce gold and orange jigs and a minnow. Pulling gold spinners and bottom bouncers in the same depth outside of the reefs using crawlers or leeches has been working too. Areas around Big Narrows, Little Oak and east side of Falcon Island have all been producing lots of nice walleyes.

Muskie
We are starting to hear of more muskies being seen. Lots of picture snapping has been going on and stories to tell. Several measuring 40+ inches have been found lately. Top water and small baits have been the best in shallow weedy bays.

We are known for walleyes, muskies, crappies and pike but check out what the Thillman Frasco Group and Guide Eric Grundahl reeled in!   They headed out on a ninety minute cruise, enjoyed beautiful scenery and excellent trout fishing.

Walleyes are hot!
Depths of 16-22 feet of water during the day and in shallow 8-12 feet in the evening have been hot spots along rocky points and mud jigging with shiny jigs and a minnow. Pulling plugs in the evening along shorelines has also been good.  Guide tip: Work the points and shorelines. If you aren’t finding them try a different depth.

Trophy Pike
Lots of huge pike swim in the waters of Lake of the Woods.  Rocky points in 2-10 feet of water and weedy shallow bays are great spots to find these fish this time of year.  Spinners, spoons and plugs are working well.  The smaller the tackle the better is the best approach.

Smallmouth Bass
Rock points and shallow weedy bays in 2’-20’ are the best spots to find bass.  Spinners, spoons and plugs are the best approach. A sweet spot is a rock pile in front of a weedy area. If you can cast over the rock pile and get into those weeds you should find some good action.

Muskie season opens June 18.
The spawn is almost over and the season opens up soon!

It looks like summer!  Current water temperature is 61 degrees.

Jigging for walleyes
Anglers continue to fish in close to Oak Island and the surrounding islands mainly on the Minnesota side. Jigging with an orange or green ¼ ounce jig tipped with a chub minnow in 20’-25’ of water seems to be bringing in the best results. Water temperature is hovering around 60 degrees.  The catch has been mainly 13”-17” walleyes and a few saugers in the mix.

The muskies are getting frisky!
A couple of anglers were out casting for northern pike this past week and a few muskies took a nibble. Muskie season opens June 18, and it sounds like they are hungry! Give us a call and we will set you up with a professional guide that knows all of the best bait, tricks, tips and places to go.

Great walleye bite!
Some nice 14”-16” walleyes are being found around points and shorelines in 14’-24’ of water.  Water temperature is 60 degrees.  Jigging with gold or orange jigs tipped with a minnow has been the most successful. Summer is here! Time to get out fishing, the guides are ready!  Anglers have found a few bass and pike as well. Pitching dead ciscos with a bobber on a quick strike rig on bottom or just 6 inches off bottom is working well to lure in these fish in shallow weedy bays.

Another year is in the books

Due to the warm temperatures and areas we need to travel to get to the island, ice fishing is done for the year.  The ice road is closing tomorrow. The bar, restaurant and lodging will be open through the weekend.  The snowmobile trail will be open through the weekend. We have lodging available if you would like to make one last trip out. Thanks for another great season. Sportsman’s Lodge Rainy River location will be open for ice fishing through this weekend and spring river fishing starting Monday.

Check out some of these dandies!  On the left, Neil Fruechte reeled in this nice 28 inch walleye using a whole minnow on a light pink fat boy lure. On the right is a real nice 40.5 inch northern pike!

Happy Thanksgiving!
From our homes to yours, the staff at Sportsman’s Lodges wishes you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving!

It’s Freezing Season!
The freezing season is in progress. Late last week small bays froze over including the Baudette Bay in Baudette and parts of Young’s Bay at the Northwest Angle near our Oak Island location. The forecast for the week ahead is calling for lows in the teens. We expect to see the bays continue to make ice and the big lake continue to cool down. Now all we need is the wind to keep calm and subzero temperatures and we will start to make some serious ice. It is crazy how fast the season can change. Once we get below zero we can make an inch or two a day! When we get 10-12 inches of safe ice, we are ready to roll! Stay tuned for updates. At this point an early December start date is in our sights.
