Calm and clear…

When talking with the guides this last week, they said, “find the calm and the clear water and you can catch fish anywhere. That certainly has been the case.  The shiner run continues in the River and most anywhere, especially in the 18’ depth, from the International Bridge to the Gap will put you on the walleyes. Head north towards Garden Island, Hay Island or Little Oak around the 25’ depth, throw your line in that’s tipped with a jig and a frozen shiner and you will catch walleye.  Gold, pink or white are the hot colors.  The water temp is currently at 47.7 degrees.  Temperatures forecasted for the week range from highs in the 40’s and 50’s to lows in the mid-20’s to low 30’s with winds ranging from 6-12mph.

Head to the River or the Lake…

…and you shall find fish.  The Rainy River provided not only the needed windbreak but also the limits of walleyes and saugers that fisherman were seeking. Gold jigs tipped with frozen shiners are producing the greatest amounts but have also heard that pink or white jigs are productive as well.  The shiner run continues in the River and most anywhere, especially in the 18’ depth, from the International Bridge to the Gap, will put you on the walleyes. Areas outside of Morris Point in the 18’-20’ depths are also producing well for anglers.  Up and around Garden Island in the 18’-22’ depth gave anglers their limits as well.  The water temp is currently at 49.5 degrees.  Temperatures forecasted for the week range greatly from highs in the mid-40’s to mid-60’s and lows in the low 30’s to mid-40’s and variable winds from 7-17mph.

Oak Island Lake of the Woods Fishing Report

by
October 22, 2014

Now for winter…

This last week was the end of the summer season for Sportsman’s Oak Island.  The walleye, crappie and muskie bite did not disappoint anglers as there was a good bite to be had.  Reports also indicated nice-size fish with good color as well.  The fish were not that picky as they were found to be biting on either the West or the East side of Falcon Island, as well as the South side of Oak Island.

Our island outpost, Sportsman’s Oak Island Lodge is now closed until December, but our reservation desk is open year round. Make your winter reservations now online or by calling 800-772-8411!

The full force of fall…

Gold jigs tipped with frozen shiners are bringing in the limits of walleyes and saugers.  Areas outside of Pine Island or Morris Point in the 15’-20’ depths are producing well for anglers.  Most anywhere in the River has been productive as well.  The 17’-18’ depths are giving anglers their best chances of limiting out.  Pink or gold jigs tipped with a frozen shiner is the hot bait of the week.  With the wind and the rain that we’ve had, it seemed to have slowed down the shiners just a bit.  They are still there, just not as heavy as when the water is clearer. Light and variable winds in the forecast should help clear the water. But where there are shiners, the walleyes are sure to follow.  The water temp is currently at 48.2 degrees.  The temperatures forecasted for the week include highs in the mid 40’s to mid-50’s and lows down near freezing, with the winds averaging around 12mph.

Because we are still in the midst of repairing our docks from this summer’s high water, only some of the boat slips are rentable.  They are on a reserved-basis only so please call the front desk at 1-800-862-8602 to find out if there is one available.  However at this time, there is no electricity at the docks so please keep that in mind when wanting to reserve a slip.

October 16, 2014

October 19th…

…is the last day of fishing from Sportsman’s OakIsland.  They will re-open mid December. The office is open year round to answer any questions and take reservations.  Gold jigs with frozen shiners have been producing limits of walleyes.  The most effective areas have been around Little Oak and Oak in the 18’-24’ depths.  You may even be able to catch some perch, crappie or bass as well.  The muskie bite is active around the shore lines and the rocks and they have started to follow the walleyes as well.  Fall temperatures look to be in the mid 40’s to low 50’s for the highs, with lows in the mid-30’s. The wind varies anywhere from 9-18mph.

Such is the life…

…of a fisherman these days.  Hot, cold, rain, snow, sun, wind…you name it, we’ve had it.  But despite all of that, limits of walleyes have still been caught.  Jigs tipped with frozen shiners are producing the best chances of garnering your limit of walleyes.  Head over in front of Zippel Bay or around the Gap in around 18’-28’ feet and be ready to reel in those walleyes.  Drifting with spinners near or around Garden Island in any direction in 15’-25’ depths have been producing limits of walleyes/saugers for anglers.

We had some snow and some slush this last week. The temperature looks for highs in the high 40’s to low 50’s with the lows close to freezing.  There is also a chance of rain throughout the week. The water temperature is currently 50.1 degrees so it has dropped 10 degrees from last week’s report. That will surely set the stage for the annual emerald shiner run. Where shiners run, walleyes are sure to follow. Fall fishing is a great time!

Only a few weeks left…

…of fishing from Sportsman’s Oak Island.  Oak Island’s last day of the summer season will be October 19, 2014. They will re-open mid December. The office is open year round to answer any questions and take reservations.  But in the meantime, the fish are still in the water to be caught by anglers young and old.  Jigging with frozen shiners has been producing walleyes.  Gold continues to be the hot color.  Around Little Oak and Oak in the 18’-24’ depths have been the hot spots.  Be on the lookout for other species of fish as you may even be able to catch some perch, crappie or bass as well.  The muskie bite is active around the shore lines and the rocks and they have started to follow the walleyes as well.  Fall has arrived with the temperatures being in the in the high 40’s to low 50’s for the highs and with the lows in the mid-30’s.

Despite the cool down…

…fishing has been hot.  Walleyes have been found either close by or far away from the Lodge.  Drifting with spinners near or around Garden Island in any direction in 15’-25’ depths have been producing limits of walleyes/saugers for anglers.  Also effective has been in 20’-30’ water in front of Zippel Bay, around Pine Island or in the Lighthouse Gap.  Jigs tipped with frozen shiners are producing the best chances of garnering your limit of walleyes.

This last week was some of the nicest weather we have had all summer.  But change is in the air.  The water temperature is currently 61.5 degrees but with the air temps forecasted for the mid-40’s to low 50’s this week, a cool down is inevitable.  That, in turn, will set the stage for the annual emerald shiner run. Where shiners run, walleyes are sure to follow. Fall fishing is a great time!

To the Island…

Hammered gold jigs tipped with minnows or crawler harnesses with leeches is producing the best chances of the walleye bite. The areas of 18’-25’ around Little Oak still are producing the best chances for fish to be caught.  Be on the lookout for other species of fish as you may even be able to catch some perch, crappie or bass as well.  The muskie bite is active around the shore lines or in the weed beds. Fall is in the air next week with temperatures in the mid-40’s to low 50’s with chances of rain and high winds.

Between the Lake and the River…

…walleyes are being found.  Limits of walleye and saugers have been caught in the areas by Garden Island and Little Oak. Hammered gold spinners tipped with a leech or a crawler have been effective in 14’-24’ water. The areas outside of Pine Island or Zippel Bay have been producing the walleye bite as well.  The depths between 24’ and 30’ seem to give you the best chances of the bite.  Jigs with frozen shiners have been producing the best action.  On the River, get to the 14’-20’ areas and walleyes can be found.  Jigs with shiners have been the most effective here as well.

Fall is in the air. The current water temperature is 59.7 degrees. We have started to see the walleyes move in shallower and up river. The stage is getting set for the annual emerald shiner run. Where shiners run, walleyes are sure to follow. Fall fishing is a great time!  Fall is also a great time to experience the changing of the seasons and the changing of the colors.  Nature’s palette can provide an excellent backdrop to all of your fishing pictures. The Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources Fall Color Finder is a great resource to find where the colors are at.
Mother Nature likes to toy with us in the Fall.  One needs to be prepared for any type of weather during this time.  The weather forecast looks to bring us temperatures in the high 60’s to the high 70’s and SUN.  There are a few days with rain forecasted and winds look to remain steady between 8 and 11mph.  The best advice is to dress in layers and be prepared for anything!!
