Lake of the Woods Current Ice Conditions Report

11/27/2013
Ice Fishing season 2013-2014 kickoff is in our very near future!

Check out these pictures. What a view yesterday.  The ice crew found 4-7 inches of ice on Four Mile Bay and 4-6 inches on the lake just outside of Pine Island. In the northern areas near Oak Island and the Northwest Angle, 2-4 inches is reported.  We were hoping to get an airplane up and check to see if there are any areas of open water in any parts in the middle of the lake today, but were unable to, due to the snowfall.  We plan to do so as soon as the weather clears. Please keep in mind we only report ice conditions in the areas we travel and fish. The entire lake does not freeze equally. If you plan to venture out, make sure you know where you are going.  Safety first!
Next week is looking good

As soon as we get 10-12 inches of ice in the areas we travel and fish, we start the season.  If the forecast stays cold we should have no problem starting our season on the south end at Sportsman’s Lodge Rainy River location by Dec 6 or 7 and at our Oak Island locations a week or so later once we have time to get a real good ice base over the areas between the islands where there is more current.   The crew plans to head out again Monday to check on how much progress we made over the weekend. Stay tuned! It won’t be long!
Walleye forecast

Big walleyes with a chance of saugers are in the forecast.  The first few inches of ice have frozen clear and smooth. Perfect for an great early season bite!

Island Action

by

The fishing action has been good this week. Crappies, Walleyes, Muskies, Bass, Pike, you name it we have been enjoying it. Our island hideaway will be open until Oct 13. Give us a call at 800-772-8411 to make a last minute trip before the snow flies. We will then re-open for winter ice fishing mid-December. Sportsman’s Lodge on the Rainy River will not close for freeze up and will have lodging available right through the fall.

Walleyes
Nice healthy 16”-18” walleyes have been fruitful around points especially on the west side of Falcon Island, Deep Water Bay and Soldier’s Point just a hop, skip and a jump from the lodge. Jigging with a minnow works well.

Crappies
Anglers enjoyed another great week of crappie fishing. Points in 33’-35’ of water has been good, with a jig and minnow.

Muskies
Fall is a great time! Trolling in 8’-10’ along shorelines has worked well this week. Triple D’s, Grandma’s and Jake lures have been hot.

Pike
Nice 25”+ pike have been found in the same areas muskies have been lurking, 8’-10’ along shorelines.

Bass
Casting cowgirls along shorelines has been the most successful approach.

Sportsman’s Oak Island Lodge Fishing Report

by

Good walleye fishing this week has been found in 26’-28’ of water along rocky shorelines. Jig tipped with a minnow is working well.

Crappies were a little tougher to find this week, but the cool weather coming in should help get these fish active again. 30’-35’ around structure using a jig and minnow is a perfect place to find them.

Fall is a super time of year to get into good muskie fishing. Rocky areas are the place to find them.

Sportsman’s Oak Island and Eagle Ridge locations will be open through Oct 13 for the season. Give us a call to make a last minute trip.

Ready for winter? We are now taking reservations for the winter season. Give us a call 800-772-8411 to book your ice fishing trip or reserve online.

Spotty walleye fishing this week but the perch, muskie and crappies are sure biting! 9/11/2013

by

We have had a weather front moving through the past few days making the walleye bite a little challenging, but we anticipate it to straighten out within the next few days. Yesterday morning’s bite was better with the cloud cover overhead compared to the afternoon when the sun came out. 23-27’ of water on the reefs using a 3/8 oz. gold, pink or orange jig tipped with a minnow has been working best.

Guides are reporting the perch and crappie bite has been good and getting better and better as we have been moving into fall. Nice crappies have been found vertically jigging in  35’-45’ feet of water using 3/8 oz. or lighter jigs tipped with minnow. Jumbo perch have been located in shallow spots to bays and inlets. The most effective technique is the same as crappie and walleye this time of year, a jig and a minnow.

Muskie bite is strong
Shallow crank baits and Danny baits have been Hot! Hot! Hot! in bays near Oak Island.

Get away from it all at Sportsman’s Eagle Ridge our two cabin hideaway on Oak Island.

A perfect private setting with spectacular views for a group of 2-16 just a short boat ride or walk down the trail to Sportsman’s Oak Island Lodge. Walleyes, Muskies and Bears – 9/4/2013

by

The best walleye has been around Little Oak on the American side and around Falcon Island and tug channel right on the Canadian side now. Jigging in ten to twenty feet of water tipped with a minnow has brought in the best limits.

Fall is just around the corner which means the fishing will start to get closer to the lodge.

Muskies continue to be found in the weedy bays of the islands. Red and white bait have been producing the most. Fall is one of the best times of year for Muskie fishing.

It won’t be long and the leaves will start to turn and the geese & ducks will be flying overhead, a recent sighting of a bear on a nearby island getting ready for his long winter nap this week, and the scenery you only see in books is what our area is all about!  Trust me, once you come, you will never want to leave! Not much change this week, just good fishing! 8/26/2013

by

Hungry walleyes have been found in deep rocky areas in 22’-25’.  Dead minnow on a 3/8 oz chartreuse and black jig has worked best. Little Oak Island and areas north around Skeet have been good.  The evening bite has been the best.

Pike & Musky
Pike and musky have been found in the deep weed beds especially in the late afternoon using a cowgirl
