Reeling in the walleyes
Nice 14-15 inch walleyes and a few larger have been caught this week. Pulling hammered gold spinners and a 1-2 ounce sinker tipped with a minnow in 14’-16’ has been working well or a 3/8 ounce jig of any color tipped with a minnow. Rocky lake bottom have been best, but don’t count out the mud for the weekend.
50 inch muskie!
Some recent guests sure got a surprise this week. They were jigging for walleyes in 15 feet of water when they got a tug and then another real big tug. After a fight, a 50 inch muskie came to the surface! What a thrill!
Spring Bass & Pike bite
The spring bass and pike bite has been real good. Casting shad raps in shallow weed beds is the best approach. Several 20”-22” pike have been found this week.

Minnesota Walleye Opener started with a bang!
Minnesota Walleye Opener started out with a bang!
Good fishing was found this weekend. Sand and rock bottom in 14’-18’ feet of water around points were some of the best spots. A limit was easy to come by. Gold or gold and pink 3/8 ounce jigs or hammered gold spinners and a 1 oz. sinker tipped with a minnow worked best. Ontario opens this weekend. Water temperature is 52 degrees. The summer season is starting!
Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass
The pike and bass bite have been real active. Shallow weed beds have been hot spots. Flashy crank baits and spoons are working well.

Oak Island Ice Conditions & Fishing Report
Ice Conditions
Ice is still good in the areas we travel and fish. The ice road has been closed due to road on the land to access the lake has got too muddy. No change in the ice. We plan to fish through March 21 at this point and will pick our guests up at Young’s Bay using track vehicles.

Fishing Report
Plain hooks and brightly colored spoons tipped with a minnow have been working well. Nice 15-18” walleyes, several sauger and a few jumbo perch have been coming through the holes this week. Varying depths in 17’-22’ and 25’-28’ has been best. Tip – Try one rod hugged close to bottom and the other a few inches off bottom and see what works best for you.

Fish On!
Warm weather has been in the area, but we are still freezing at night and the 10 day forecast is calling for much of the same. We have lost some snow but ice is good, no loss. As long as we don’t get a stretch of nights not freezing we see no problem continuing to ice fish through our season. Here at Oak Island we will be for ice fishing through March 21 and the lodge open through March 22. The main lodge near Baudette does not close during ice out.
Anglers have been reeling in 30% walleyes, 60% saugers and the balance in perch and northern pike. The catching success has increased over the past week. Depths ranging from 17’-27’ have been doing the best. As far as big fish, a few nice 38” and 41” pike have been caught as well as some nice walleyes in the 22”-27” range. A good run from 8am-10am and 2pm-5pm have been the most aggressive times of the day. Gold jigs tipped with a minnow are the hot ticket and keeping your jig really tight to bottom.

Get in on the late season action!
The best action has been between 8am-10am and 2pm-5pm this week. Anglers are reeling in a 50/50 walleye and sauger mix along with a few perch. The white gemini tipped with a minnow has been the hot tackle this week in 22’-26’ of water on hard bottom. Combination of a little jigging but mostly dead sticking has worked well.
Ice Conditions
38+ inches of ice in the areas we fish and travel right now.

Cool temps, hot fishing!
A great morning and late afternoon bite has been what anglers are after this week. Chartreuse macho minnow tipped with a live minnow has been popular. Quite a few saugers, some nice walleyes, a few perch and northern pike have been the catch of the day. Most of the fish this week were in the 12”-18” range and caught in 20’-27’ of water.

The Fishing Scoop
The guides on the island report a nice mix of walleyes and saugers and good catch rates lately. We are currently seeing the best results along some structure in depths between 20’-26’ of water just outside of Oak Island. The best presentation has been gold, pink and orange jigs tipped with a chub minnow. Jigging and feeling for the optimum time to set the hook is the trick!
