Reminder to people driving up to the Northwest Angle/Oak Island this summer to our island resorts. Due to the Avian Influenza Outbreak in Ontario, raw eggs and raw poultry are not allowed to be brought across the border at this time. These products can be purchased in Sprague, Manitoba once you enter into Canada. No Fishing License required during Take-A-Kid Fishing Weekend June 5-7, 2015 in Minnesota.

Walleyes, walleyes, walleyes

Nice 14”-18” walleyes are being found in 20’-24’ of water using gold or orange jigs and minnows this week. Areas around points and reefs south of Oak Island and around Falcon Island on the Ontario side are some of the hot spots this week.

Bass & Pike
Anglers have been getting into some nice bass in the shallow weeds using brightly colored spoons. Pike are hitting on small spinner baits in 7-10’ of water along shorelines.

Yum, fresh fish!
Be sure to book a shore lunch on your next trip with a guide. There is nothing better in my mind than fresh fried walleye and all the fixings midday or at the end of the day with backdrop of the lake.

The weather is heating up and so is the fishing!

The past few days the catching has really picked up! Nice walleyes have been found in the mud just outside Pine Island in 15’-22’ of water. Jigging with 3/8 oz. jigs tipped with a chub or shiner minnow has been working great. Anglers are also having good luck fishing the reefs farther north as well in 16’-21’ of water with the same approach. Reports of many 16”-26” walleyes have been biting this week. Water temperature is climbing; currently we are sitting at 60 degrees.

Weather is shaping up for the weekend!
The past week has been rainy and cool, but the holiday weekend forecast looks great! We expect the catching to pick up too!

The best fishing
Areas around Lighthouse Gap and outside of Pine Island in 17’-24’ has been the best spots to get into some good walleye fishing. The river has been hit or miss. Few feet shallower is best in the mornings and evenings.  Water temperature is currently hovering around 51-53 degrees. Hammered gold spinners with 1-2 oz. jigs and 3/8 oz. gold or bright orange jigs tipped with a minnow are working best.
